Active Project Storage

Setting up my project’s storage space

Before accessing your Active Project Storage for the first time, you or another investigator must set up the space. Any investigator listed on the project in the RED system may set up the project’s storage space. The space will not be available to set up until the project’s official start date.

  • Log in to the Research Storage portal using your NC State credentials.
  • Click Research Storage in the menu.
  • Select Create Project Storage.
  • From the RED Project dropdown menu, select the appropriate project.
  • Enter a name for your project’s storage space.
  • Click Create Project Storage.

Your storage space will appear on the Research Storage Manager page.

Accessing my project’s storage space after the initial setup

Once an investigator has set up a project’s storage space, any investigator listed on the project in the RED system can view and manage the data stored in the space.

After logging in to the Research Storage portal using your NC State credentials, the storage space will automatically appear on the Research Storage Manager page. Instructions for accessing the storage space are included at the top of the page.

Giving access to others

An investigator may give internal university collaborators in addition to the project’s other investigators, as well as local IT staff, access to view or manage the data in the project’s storage space. If you need to share your data with external collaborators, you can do so using Globus.

How long will I have access to my project’s data?

The data will remain available for up to 10 years after the close of the project, or for as long as required by the relevant funding agency.

What if I need more space?

  • If you have met the initial 2 TB threshold for Active Project Storage, you may request additional space of up to 30 TB at no cost.
  • If you have met the 30 TB threshold, you may purchase additional space on an annual basis.

Contact OIT at oit_research_storage@help.ncsu.edu to discuss your storage needs.

How often is data in Research Storage backed up?

All data is backed up daily.

Security requirements
